Calum Barr

Job Title:

Graduate Project Engineer

Start Date:

May 2024

Calum’s first experience with Taylor and Fraser was on an 8-week internship back in May 2024. So impressed was he with the company, he asked if he could stay on full-time after his initial two-month spell. Taylor and Fraser obviously recognised his potential because they were quick to offer him a position as a Graduate Project Engineer.

What was your starting role at Taylor and Fraser?

I started working here as an Intern following my university graduation. The initial intention was to undertake an 8-week internship to gain real work experience. However, I enjoyed the work and appreciated the company’s culture so much that I was eager to secure a full-time position. Towards the end of the internship, I approached the Construction Director to enquire about a full-time role, and fortunately, they offered me the position of Graduate Project Engineer.

Can you give us a brief description of your current role?

The initial internship involved helping with the completion of drawings and CAD/BIM updates. Now, I am working on small projects, primarily within the Mechanical Engineering division. I will also be returning to university soon with the support of Taylor and Fraser to complete a CIBSE-accredited course in Engineering.

What aspects of your role do you particularly like?

I’d say first and foremost, the variety of the work. At this early stage in my career, I think it’s really helpful to experience all different types and sizes of projects, and there’s certainly a broad range of work going on at Taylor and Fraser.

I also enjoy the daily interaction in the office; everyone is exceedingly helpful and takes the time to help when you ask for support. And I’m not stuck in the office, I enjoy visiting sites where I can see projects coming to life.

Lastly, I appreciate being given responsibility. Even at this early stage of my career, I feel trusted and it is rewarded by being given responsibility for certain areas of the project.

Do you find the company supportive in terms of personal development?

Yes, absolutely. There’s a lot of daily learning from all those around me who are helpful and freely offer me time when I need it. Beyond that, there is a strong encouragement to learn and develop, all of which is backed up by company support. I am currently enrolled in a Construction Apprenticeship in Site Management. It’s a fairly short modular course, but it’s an example of the many ways you can increase your knowledge.

There is genuine support for anyone who wishes to pursue relevant qualifications.

What do you like about working with Taylor and Fraser?

I think the investment in people is the standout thing for me. Taylor and Fraser, along with their parent company, Suir Engineering, care about people and want them to develop both personally and within the business.

I also appreciate the immense support I get daily from those around me. It genuinely feels like a family-oriented business where everyone is enthusiastic about the progress of those around them.

What do you do outside of work?

I’m a serious Gym-goer, and I play five-a-side football weekly. I’ve also started to learn to Ski, so hopefully I’ll be proficient enough soon to hit the slopes! I also enjoy reading, which I try to do daily.

Thank you, Calum, for taking the time to share your thoughts with us. Your thirst for learning is appreciated, and we’re delighted that you are enjoying your work at Taylor and Fraser. You possess an excellent attitude and a strong commitment to everything you do, which will serve you well as your career progresses.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I’d just reiterate that I appreciate Taylor and Fraser’s investment in me, and I’m feeling very positive about the future. Suir Engineering’s influence and investment are leading the company into many larger projects, and with that will come numerous opportunities. I feel I’m in a good place to grow with the company.

I am passionate about cycling and was a very active cyclist and Parent Helper with my local cycle club in the past. However, a health condition (and the passing years!) has necessitated the adoption of a pedal-assist electric bike for some assistance. However, it allows me to continue to enjoy cycling at a pace I can manage.

We’d like to thank Eric for taking part and for his ongoing commitment to Taylor and Fraser. He is a great ambassador for the business and a well-respected member of the team.
