Project Overview
Taylor and Fraser were appointed to a multi-year framework agreement with the University of Glasgow, one of the UK’s leading universities and a globally recognised centre for teaching and research. Founded in 1451, the University consistently ranks among the world’s top universities and plays a significant role in Glasgow’s academic, cultural, and economic life.
The framework supports the University’s long-term investment programme, which is focused on enhancing the quality, performance, sustainability, and accessibility of its estate while preserving the character and operational integrity of its historic and modern buildings. Taylor and Fraser deliver upgrade and refurbishment works across a diverse portfolio of facilities, including teaching spaces, laboratories, research buildings, and student-facing environments. The majority of these buildings remain fully operational throughout the works, requiring a carefully managed approach that maintains business continuity within a live academic setting.
The appointment reflects the University’s confidence in Taylor and Fraser’s ability to deliver high-quality construction and M&E works safely, collaboratively, and with minimal disruption, while meeting the complex technical, programme, and stakeholder demands of a world-class university estate.

Construction, Mechanical & Electrical Works
Taylor and Fraser Role
Over the life of the framework, Taylor and Fraser have successfully delivered multiple concurrent projects, often running in parallel across the estate. Works have included strip-out and enabling works, structural alterations and strengthening, and the installation of new mechanical and electrical services.
Our scope has also covered transformer upgrades, fire and life safety improvements, laboratory fit-outs, accessibility enhancements, and internal refurbishments including new partitions, ceilings, and finishes. In line with the University’s sustainability objectives, we have delivered carbon reduction initiatives such as solar PV installations and LED lighting upgrades.
Key Challenges
Delivering works within a live university environment presents unique challenges. Projects must be carefully planned to ensure the safe segregation of staff, students, and construction activities, while maintaining strict controls around noise, dust, and vibration. Many projects require phased delivery or out-of-hours working to minimise disruption.
In addition, several schemes are programmed to align with academic calendars, with critical completion dates linked to term start times and university holiday periods.
Our Approach
Taylor and Fraser adopted a phased delivery strategy, developed in close coordination with the University’s Estates team. Regular on-site meetings ensured clear communication and rapid decision-making, allowing programmes to remain flexible and responsive to operational requirements.
We engaged trusted framework supply chain partners to ensure quality and certainty of delivery, procuring long-lead items early to protect programme milestones. A strong focus on planning, quality assurance, and right-first-time delivery minimised rework and reduced disruption to university operations.
Health and safety, environmental management, and statutory compliance are central to our approach, ensuring the safety of our workforce, university staff and students, and the wider public at all times.
The Outcome
Taylor and Fraser have consistently delivered high-quality projects across the University of Glasgow estate and continue to operate as a trusted framework partner.
Our collaborative approach, reliability in live environments, and ability to deliver safely and on programme have supported the University’s long-term estate strategy and ongoing campus improvements.
