Project Overview

Taylor and Fraser were appointed to the University of Strathclyde’s multi – year framework to deliver the upgrade, refurbishment and infrastructure improvement of buildings across the city centre campus. The framework forms part of the University’s long – term estate investment strategy, focused on enhancing building performance, accessibility and sustainability while maintaining full operational continuity within a live academic environment.

Many of the projects are delivered within active teaching, research and student – facing facilities, requiring a carefully planned, collaborative and flexible delivery approach. Most recently, Taylor and Fraser completed the upgrade and refurbishment of the John Anderson Building, home to the University’s Department of Physics, delivering modernised teaching, research and building services infrastructure.

Across the framework, Taylor and Fraser have delivered multiple concurrent projects involving strip – out and enabling works, structural alterations and strengthening, and the installation of new mechanical and electrical services. Works have also included transformer upgrades, fire and life – safety improvements, laboratory fit – outs, accessibility upgrades and the installation of new partitions, ceilings and internal finishes.

Carbon – reduction initiatives have been a key component of the programme, with projects incorporating energy – efficient lighting upgrades, solar photovoltaic installations and wider building performance improvements aligned with the University ’ s long – term sustainability objectives.

Key Challenges

Delivering works within a live university environment required careful segregation of construction activities from staff, students and visitors, alongside strict control of noise, dust and vibration.

Many projects were also required to align with academic timetables, with critical completion dates tied to university holiday periods and the start of teaching terms, demanding precise planning and programme management.

Our Approach

Our Approach Taylor and Fraser implemented a phase d delivery approach developed in close coordination with the University Estates team, supported by regular on – site coordination meetings and clear communication with building users.

Trusted framework supply chain partners were engaged early to ensure quality and programme certainty, while long – lead materials were procured in advance to maintain delivery schedules. A strong focus on planning, health and safety, environmental management and right – first – time installation ensured minimal disruption to university operations while maintaining high standards of quality and compliance across all projects.

The Outcome

Taylor and Fraser continue to successfully deliver a wide range of refurbishment, infrastructure and sustainability projects across the University estate, reinforcing our position as a trusted long – term framework partner.
