Taylor and Fraser fully support World Mental Health Day, which the Mental Health Foundation promotes. It’s a valuable event in the calendar that focuses attention on mental health. However, we hope that all employers appreciate that it’s about more than raising awareness on a single day; for Taylor and Fraser, it’s genuinely an ongoing priority in the business.
One in four people of working age will suffer from a mental health condition at some point in their lives. By training Supervisors and Managers in Mental Health Awareness, we can help ensure that there is someone on site who can recognise the signs of mental ill health in employees when they first develop. This can mean that someone struggling with their mental health can get the help they need much earlier on and be signposted accordingly.
Taylor & Fraser takes a proactive approach to mental health in the workplace. We have ‘mental health first-aiders’ who are specially trained to recognise and respond when they identify people struggling at work. A mental health first aider is a person who has been trained to administer mental health first aid, which an accredited mental health awareness instructor has provided.
Mental health first aid is the help offered to someone developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental illness or a mental health crisis. First aid is given until appropriate professional help is received or the situation is resolved.
We fully appreciate and accept our responsibility to every member of the Taylor and Fraser team, and we encourage all businesses to have suitably trained staff who can identify and help when needed.
World Mental Health Day is celebrated every year on 10 October. This year, the World Federation of Mental Health has set the theme of workplace mental health. The theme highlights the importance of addressing mental health and wellbeing in the workplace for the benefit of people, organisations, and communities.
