Back in June, we posted an update on the progress of our work at the grade B listed building, Murchison House. We are delighted that the work is now complete and the building is now fully re-opened.

Built in 1977, the building lies on the University of Edinburgh’s science campus at the King’s Buildings. Work started on the building in mid-December 2017 with a contract worth £7.7 million led by Keir Construction.

Taylor and Fraser were commissioned to upgrade the mechanical and electrical systems as part of a major refurbishment of this important building. The refurbishment work has helped to transform the previously vacant building into a dynamic multi-functional teaching hub in keeping with University of Edinburgh Department of Science’s global reputation.

Due to the nature of the existing building which had a very limited ceiling void, we had to install M&E services using laser levels to ensure perfect alignment. This meant the pre-planning and co-ordinaton stage was critical – a process we always undertake very thoroughly.

Murchison House was re-opened to students in September offering a host of new facilities and spaces, including three PC labs, two private study areas, nine group study spaces, one accessible study room, two collaborative teaching spaces, ten classrooms, a lecture theatre, a café, as well as rehousing the University’s careers and advice services.

The newly renovated building is now complete and offers valuable space and resources for students, staff and visitors of the University.
