Heritage, tradition and competition, linked for centuries and something we’re proud to support

The link between the Gaelic language and Shinty, one of Scotland’s oldest indigenous sports, has always been very strong. Taylor and Fraser is also proud of its strong links to both, especially recently, when Glasgow hosted the Royal National Mòd 2026 from 9th to 17th October.

This year, our Construction Director, Angus MacInnes a Gaelic native speaker, has the honour of being the Mòd Shinty Chieftain, for which he gratefully received the commemorative MacLennan Cromag (shepherd’s crook) in recognition of the role.

Angus’s involvement with this year’s National Mòd was mainly last Saturday at Glasgow Mid Argyll Shinty Club (GMA), where he is also the current President. The men’s team, which is sponsored by Taylor and Fraser, won the annual Aviemore Cup beating Aberdour 5-1, while the women’s team beat University of Glasgow 3-1 during what turned out to be a very successful day. The Mòd organisers also hosted a youth competition in the morning, involving 9 teams, six of which were made up of Gaelic speakers from around the Central Belt, which was won by Aberdour Shinty Club.

Angus has been a player, coach, manager, and now president at GMA; he is also currently vice-president of the Glasgow Celtic Society. He epitomises the link between the Gaelic language and the great sport of Shinty. By winning the Aviemore Cup last Saturday, GMA are now the most successful team in the Mòd Cup competition, which began in 1969; little wonder Angus is so proud as this happened in the same year that he is Mòd Shinty Chieftain and Club President.

GMA has two men’s teams, both of which are sponsored by Taylor and Fraser, two women’s teams, under-17s, and under-14s, and works closely with the Gaelic Medium Primary Schools in Glasgow and East Dunbartonshire to provide pathways into the sport. Anyone interested can find out more here.

Taylor and Fraser’s support goes far beyond financial assistance; we have donated surplus items, including storage containers and fencing. Our sponsorship aligns with the company’s values and heritage; it supports sport and culture that has endured for generations; we hope our contributions help ensure it continues for many more years.
